TSR 11/20/19 CBB Picks

Big Takeaways from Tuesday
1- Quentin Grimes can carry Houston this season in the AAC and beyond. The Kansas transfer had a career night against Rice on Tuesday, scoring 32 points in addition to 9 boards and 5 assists. His 18.3 points per game at this point show that he can assume the role of a Corey Davis Jr or Rob Gray as the star of this year's Cougars team. If he plays this well, they will contend with Memphis and Cincinnati for the league title, and win in the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year.

2-Anthony Lamb is an elite player in college basketball this year. After hitting the game-winner against St. John's this weekend, the Catamounts' star scored 30 points on Virginia last night. This is remarkable considering the Cavaliers held their previous three opponents to 34, 34 and 42 total. Assuming they don't get knocked out in the America East tournament, Lamb is going to lead Vermont to an upset in Round 1 of the NCAA Tournament this March.

3-UTEP is playing some fantastic basketball this season. In their charity exhibition, they defeated Texas Tech, and many people viewed this as a flaw that resulted from it being an exhibition game. Perhaps the Miners are a legitimate team this season. They completed the New Mexico sweep on Tuesday night, defeating the Lobos 66-63 after knocking out New Mexico State earlier this year. At 4-0, they are looking to be a contender in the CUSA this year.

Game 1: Siena at Yale (7:00, ESPN+)
Nick: Yale
Sam: Yale
Zach: Yale
Game 2: Stephen F Austin at Rutgers (7:00)
Nick: Stephen F Austin--Lately the Big Ten’s bottom feeders have been struggling to win games against mid-major teams, and I like the Lumberjacks to continue this trend.
Sam: Rutgers-- Watch out for the Lumberjacks’ Kevon Harris who is averaging nearly 20 points per game through his first four.
Zach: Rutgers--After the loss to St. Bonaventure, the Scarlet Knights bounce back and beat a tough Stephen F Austin team.
Game 3: Princeton at Indiana (7:00, BTN)
Nick: Indiana--I think that Archie Miller will finally get his team rolling this year. It appears that the pieces are coming together early this season. Also, this is probably the deepest “host tournament” where one school creates their own event to get four home games. The fact that Princeton, South Dakota State and improved Louisiana Tech and Troy teams square off in the Indiana Challenge is pretty good. Better than some of these events...
Sam: Indiana-- For a team that really struggled from beyond the arc last year, the Hoosiers are off to a good start this year. Al Durham is shooting nearly 53% from deep, and Justin Smith checks in at nearly 43%.
Zach: Indiana--The Hoosiers just have more talent and that’s why they will win.
Game 4: Georgia Tech at Georgia (7:00, SEC)
Nick: Georgia--Anthony Edwards is an elite player, and reports show that there are going to be 26 scouts from 20 different NBA teams to watch this game on Wednesday night. Tom Crean is one of the most underappreciated coaches in the country, as he was unjustly ran out of Indiana. This is his chance to show that he can put together a good team anywhere, succeeding in Athens.
Sam: Georgia-- This could be a bit of a trap game for the Bulldogs before they head to Maui for a huge three games. Anthony Edwards has more than lived up to his billing, averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game thus far.
Zach: Georgia
Game 5: Cornell at Syracuse (7:30, ACC)
Nick: Syracuse--Hey look, another riveting rivalry against an in-state team for Boeheim. Man oh man, does he make his schedule so daunting each year...
Sam: Syracuse
Zach: Syracuse
Game 6: Belmont at Lipscomb (7:30, ESPN+)
Nick: Belmont
Sam: Belmont-- New Bruin head coach Casey Alexander leads his team to a victory over the team he used to coach.
Zach: Belmont
Game 7: Austin Peay at Vanderbilt (8:00, ESPN+)
Nick: Vanderbilt
Sam: Vanderbilt
Zach: Vanderbilt
Game 8: BYU at Boise St (10:00, CBSSN)
Nick: BYU--TJ Haws is going to be the senior that carries his team to the NCAA Tournament, as he will help the third team in the WCC playing in March.
Sam: BYU
Zach: BYU
Game 9: San Diego St at San Diego (11:00)
Nick: San Diego St--Do you remember when this crosstown rivalry was played at Petco Park?
Sam: San Diego St
Zach: San Diego St
Game 10: St Mary’s vs Fresno St (11:00, ESPNU)
Nick: St. Mary’s--The Gaels are big winners in this battle of California mid-majors.
Sam: St. Mary’s
Zach: St. Mary’s
Upset Pick (not in games above):
Nick: UC Santa Barbara over Oregon State
Sam: Chattanooga over Florida State
Zach: Eastern Washington over Boston College
