4/15 CPBL Update: Chinatrust Brothers Drop First Two Games

There may be no baseball in the MLB, but in Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League, the action has begun. With a void in the baseball world, we will be looking at this league to come through with some content, and if other leagues begin, we will include them as well!

We will start with a primer and introduction of the teams in the league. The CPBL has four active teams in the 2020 season, with the logos and team names (left to right) below.

The Uni-President Lions are based in Tainan City, Taiwan. They finished last in 2019.
The Fubon Guardians are based in New Taipei City, Taiwan. They were 3rd place last year.
The Rakuten Monkeys are based in Taoyuan City, Taiwan. They won the league last season.
The Chinatrust Brothers are based in Taichung, Taiwan. They finished in 2nd place a year ago.
The fifth team above is the Weichuan Dragons, who are a minor league team this season.

Similar to many minor leagues in America such as the Midwest League, the CPBL plays their season in two halves. Typically there is an All-Star game, but due to COVID-19 it will not be taking place this year.

WEEKLY RECAP

Sunday April 12: UniLions 4 Brothers 1 (F/11)

On Opening Day of the CPBL season, the UniLions headed to Taichung to take on the Brothers. The first run of the 2020 season was scored when Kai-Wen Zheng (1) launched a home run to left field to give the UniLions a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Brothers tied in on a home run by Zi-Xian Zhan (1).

The score would remain tied until the 11th inning, when the UniLions broke through with three runs. Second baseman Jie-Xian Chen's single scored Kai-Wen Zheng and put the UniLions ahead 2-1. A two-RBI double by Fu-Lin Kuo would extend the lead to three, and that would be more than enough. Hang Lin (1) came in and recorded the save in the bottom of the 11th and finished the victory.

Not to be lost in defeat were the great pitching efforts by both starters. The UniLions' Ryan Feierabend went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and just one earned run. Feierabend also recorded four strikeouts, while walking two. On the other side, the Brothers started Ariel Miranda, who allowed three hits, with the home run as his only run allowed. He struck out seven, but he walked four.  It should be noted that these are both former MLB pitchers, Feierabend appeared in 33 games (20 starts) most recently with Toronto in 2019, while Miranda pitched in 44 games (40 starts) most recently with Seattle in 2018.

Tuesday April 14: Guardians 3 Brothers 1

The offensive woes of the Brothers continued again on Tuesday, as they were only able to score a single run once again. This time, they recorded five hits, but were unable to string them together to send more runners across the plate. Henry Sosa (1-0) was in control for the Guardians, as he got the victory after pitching 7 innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run, while striking out five.

Offensively for the Guardians, they were the benefactors of the long ball early on. Kuo-Hui Kao (1) got the scoring started with a home run that was belted deep into the empty bleachers in right field. In the third inning, Chin-Lung Hu expanded the lead for the Guardians with an RBI double. After the Brothers scored on an RBI groundout by Ji-Hong Xu, the Guardians would tack on the final run on a fielders choice.
