4/22 CPBL Update: Rakuten Monkeys Remain Undefeated

The Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan continues on with it's second full week of action. Below is a recap of the past seven days in the CPBL, a preview of what's ahead, and more!

GAME RECAPS

Wednesday April 15

Guardians 7 Brothers 6 (F/11)
It took two extra innings, but the Fubon Guardians preserved their undefeated season with a 7-6 victory over the winless Chinatrust Brothers (0-3). After Fubon jumped out to an early lead on an RBI single by Yi-Quan Lin, the Brothers stormed back with three runs in the third. In the top of the sixth, the Guardians took the lead back with their own three-run inning. Che-Hsuan Lin (1) was the star of this inning, as his two-run home run put Fubon back in front. The Guardians bullpen gave up two more runs however, and they needed the ninth inning heroics of Chin-Lung Hu to send the game to extra innings. In the 11th inning, both teams scored, but the Guardians' two runs in the top half were too much to overcome. Zi-Xian Zhan was the star of the show in this game for the Brothers, as he had three RBIs.

Monkeys 9 UniLions 8 (F/12)
In their first game of the 2020 CPBL season, the Rakuten Monkeys earned a victory, though they needed all twelve innings to get there. These two teams nearly matched each other blow for blow offensively, until the final inning of play. In the bottom of the twelfth, Yu-Xian Zhu delivered the ultimate finisher, a walk-off home run.

This was the finish to a fantastic day for Yu-Xian Zhu, who finished the game 4/6, with three home runs, three runs scored and four RBIs.

Thursday April 16

Monkeys 15 UniLions 3
The offense for the Rakuten Monkeys did not skip a beat as the series' second game was underway. This bunch exploded for fifteen runs, including seven in the seventh inning. After spotting the UniLions a run in the top half of the first, and falling behind 2-1 after the third, Rakuten scored 14 unanswered runs between the fourth and seventh innings. Once again, Yu-Xian Zhu stole the show, as he was 3/4 with two runs scored, a pair of home runs (fourth and fifth of the season) and five RBIs. Zhi-Yu Zhan also had a clutch hit at the plate in this game, as he cleared the bases with a pinch-hit, three RBI double.

Friday April 17

Brothers 6 UniLions 1
After three tough losses to start the season, the Chinatrust Brothers got their first win of the season on Friday. The Brothers got seven stellar innings from Esmil Rogers, as the former MLB pitcher (210 appearances for CLE, COL, NYY, TOR) allowed six hits and just one earned run. He also struck out eleven to get his first win of 2020 (1-0). The UniLions were haunted defensively by four errors in the field that led to five unearned runs.

Monkeys 11 Guardians 10
The offense was explosive once again for the Monkeys, as they needed all eleven runs to keep their undefeated record. After Rakuten jumped out to a 5-2 lead, Fubon responded with seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Guardians sent eleven batters to the plate in the fifth inning, and got a home run from both Pei-Feng Dai (2) and Yi-Quan Lin (1). The big star offensively for the Monkeys was Li Lin. He was 3/4 with four runs scored, four RBIs and a pair of home runs, including the game-winner.

Saturday April 18

Brothers 6 UniLions 2
The Brothers won this game as a result of two big offensive innings. They scored four runs in the bottom of the third, and they followed that up with two runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the victory. Wei-Chen Wang was the offensive star for the Brothers, as he was 3/3 in the leadoff spot. Kun-Yu Jiang showed off his power with his first home run of 2020. In his second start of the season, Ariel Miranda (1-0) got his first victory. He went seven innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs and one walk, while striking out ten.

Monkeys 12 Guardians 9
The undefeated season of the Rakuten Monkeys continued with yet another impressive offensive display. On Saturday, they racked up sixteen hits and this allowed them to hold off a late surge by the Guardians in which they scored four ninth inning runs. Lin Li once again flexed his muscle at the plate with a four RBI game. Hong-Yu Lin (1) got his first home run of the season in this game for the Monkeys. On the mound, Rakuten got a solid start from Ba Neng (1-0), who went seven innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out seven. Not to be lost in defeat was the offensive play of Fubon's Pin-Chieh Chen, who hit his first home run of the season and had three RBI.

Sunday April 19

UniLions 7 Brothers 4
The four-game losing streak for the UniLions was snapped on Sunday with their win on the road against the Brothers. The UniLions had twelve hits, and they capitalized with three runs in the first two innings. Both Jie-Xian Chen and An-Ke Lin had two RBIs for the UniLions in this ballgame.

Monkeys 3 Guardians 1
It was the fifth straight win for the Monkeys, but it will be remembered in the COVID-19 highlight reel for providing the first sports brawl we have witnessed live in what seems like an eternity! This was a mild brawl in terms of American standards, but the rush of those players meandering out there was truly a sight to see, and it made you miss American sports!
