Nick's Sports Sprint: September 24, 2020

Each day, Nick will give his daily thoughts on the world of sports. These updates will consist of recaps, previews, insights, stats, opinions, predictions and more!

WATCH THESE

Gale Sayers, the legendary Bears running back, passed away at the age of 77. Here is a tweet that has the highlights from his historic six-touchdown win over the 49ers on a muddy Wrigley Field.

Additionally, John Laurinaitis, part of the Road Warrior tag team in the pro wrestling word (and also father of Ohio State and NFL linebacker James Laurinaitis) passed away. WWE YouTube put together this awesome (yet lengthy) montage to this legend.

BEST ARTICLES I READ YESTERDAY

Pete Thamel wrote a fantastic piece about whether Deion Sanders will succeed at Jackson State. I think Prime Time is an awesome hire for Jackson State on a publicity front, but will it actually succeed? He has little coaching experience, and he is jumping straight into leading an FCS program. I'm doubtful it works, but I can't wait to watch the product this spring. Especially if he really does bring in the coaching staff that is rumored (Terrell Owens and Warren Sapp on the list).

Scott DeCamp of MLive, along with Ron Pesch, wrote an awesome history about Hackley Stadium in Muskegon. They just renovated the field, and that will be on display in their home opener against Mona Shores on Friday night. I have been there for a game, and like the article said, this may be the best place to watch a high school football game. When fans can attend again, make the road trip folks.

TWEETS OF THE DAY

The Tyrod Taylor story continues to get crazier, as it appears that the team doctor punctured his lung. This caused him to miss this past Sunday's game, and it appears even more in the future. As a law school student, the liability and past law suits in this thread were very interesting to read through. There is a chance that Tyrod could actually get some money from this incident, especially if there is a long term impact on his career.

Are you not a Lions fan and curious what it's like? Jeff Daniels did a pretty great job of explaining how each Sunday really is with those pesky Lions. Also, I love that Gail Cogdill drew him into the Lions, a player many of us (Rich Eisen included) have never heard of. That sums up the Lions, a bunch of nobody's in any other town but Detroit. May Jason Hanson's legacy live on forever.

I know this tweet is a joke (I hope), but there are honestly people who believe this hype about Joe Milton. Based on his limited playing time in the past, I just hope that he is ready to go when they travel to Minnesota in a month, because there are no cupcakes anymore on their schedule (save maybe Rutgers). This flavor of the month quarterback in Ann Arbor will get all of the hype until they lose a game or two. It's the September preseason Heisman instead of the August preseason Heisman this year!

This definitely isn't sports related, but it was exciting nonetheless. I was absolutely shook when I noticed the math confusion on these Pizza Rolls, so I'm glad Totinos got my message. This is my campaign for 120 pizza roll packages.

TWITTER ACCOUNT OF THE DAY

Are you a soccer fan? New to the game? @DBrovis on Twitter is a brand new account started by Deon, a friend of mine who is a fan of teams all across the world. He has been flooding the timeline with soccer news and updates, and I feel like I have learned a lot already. If you want to keep track of the sport or start a new fandom, check his account out!

IN THE NEWS

College football schedule updates with COVID changing contest dates nearly every day. These continue to make me concerned about the Big Ten's ability to play all of their games without interruption. Hopefully the testing protocols and plans are ready to go for the eight-week sprint.

I am excited to see Tiger Woods back in action in the Zozo Championship in a few weeks. It was thrilling to watch him win it all last year to tie the record, and you know the bets placed on him to break the record here will be astronomical. Tiger will be in his first full PGA event at Sherwood CC, but he won five Hero World Challenges and the epic Monday Night Golf battle against David Duval on this course, so why would anyone bet against win #7 this time around?

It looks like the MAC is going to try and play after all. A six-game season is an interesting idea. Is that even worth coming back? Well, if they start on October 31, they will be able to play all six games and then have the MAC Championship game the same weekend as all other leagues. Perhaps they could take after the B1G and have the bonus game idea that weekend? #MACtion is fantastic, so the more the merrier. My Tuesday and Wednesday nights are far too free...

Miguel Cabrera is truly the best hitter of this generation, and one of the best ever. Though these past few years have been tough with injuries and Baby Momma Drama, it's awesome to see a bit of a resurgence this fall. He is hitting .237 with 7 home runs and 26 RBI. Not the Triple Crown winner we knew, but he looks like himself a little more than in recent memory.

Tyler Herro a Hero Once Again: The Heat are now just one win away from the NBA Finals. Many would not have believed this a possibility when the Heat entered the bubble, but they are playing great basketball. Herro was 14/21 for 37 points in this win, while Bam, Jimmy Buckets and Goran Dragic also all topped the twenty-point plateau. Wouldn't Miami vs Denver be an intriguing finals?!

PREDICTIONS ON THURSDAY

Jaguars over Dolphins: How can anyone pick against Minshew Mania right now? He is playing extremely hot, and until he cools down, I can't pick against him.

Nuggets over Lakers: Come on Denver, even this bad boy up!

UAB over South Alabama: The Blazers showed flashes against Miami, but quarterback Tyler Johnston III is out indefinitely with an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. In what is clearly Alabama's biggest rivalry game, I still think they will pull this off. Vegas has them as a touchdown favorite for a reason.

PGA Corales Punta Cana Championship: I like Will Zalatoris to win this event. He is the betting favorite odds wise, but he has dominated on the Korn Ferry Tour. He hasn't finished outside the Top 20 in his last twelve events, including a T6 finish at the US Open last week. You've got to also take a look at defending champ Graeme McDowell to contend once more.

9/23 Answer: Malik Newman was the 2013 FIBA Americas U-16 Championship MVP. He helped the United States win their third straight title (streak now at six). Jamal Murray's Canadians took third.

Q: Campbell has back-to-back FBS opponents on their schedule after these alterations. They play App State this week before Wake Forest next weekend. The Fighting Camels have been better known on the hardwood. Who is their all-time leading scorer in Men's Basketball?
