TSR 11/13/19 CBB Picks

Tuesday night was a fantastic example of why we love college hoops. Great games such as Oregon defeating Memphis, Michigan defeating Creighton, Xavier knocking off Missouri in overtime, and the Oklahoma Sooners defeating Oregon State, providing entertainment all night long. That doesn't even include the upset of the season so far, as Evansville went into Lexington and defeated Kentucky, the #1 team in the country.

Yesterday's Pick Results:

Sam 6-4 (upset pick of UTEP also defeated New Mexico State)
Nick 5-5
Zach 5-5

There are a couple great games on Wednesday night, but the overall slate of action is not nearly as strong as Tuesday night. Take a look below at our ten picks and an upset to watch for tonight.

Game 1: LSU at VCU (6:00, ESPN2)
Nick: VCU--The Rams’ trademark “Havoc” defense hit full stride last year under Mike Rhoades. They will be at home, and I think this will be one of the more electric atmospheres that the Siegel Center will see this year. Expect a resume boosting win for the Rams on Wednesday night.

Sam: VCU-- I must say, I absolutely love what the VCU athletic department has done. The two most recent times they’ve lost a coach to a high major job (Shaka at Texas, Wade at LSU), they’ve gotten a home and home series out of it. This will be a great game, and I love LSU’s backcourt. I am even more in love with VCU’s length and depth. Rams in a close one at home.

Zach: VCU-- LSU is still learning to play together as they had key departures to the NBA. I agree with Sam as the Rams win a close one.

Game 2: Villanova at Ohio State (7:00, FS1)
Nick: Villanova--As Sam stated below, the absence of Andre Wesson is a huge blow for Ohio State in this game. The outside shooting of Luther Muhammad and Duane Washington Jr. will not be enough to carry OSU to victory.

Sam: Villanova-- Jeremiah Robinson-Earl is one of the best freshman in the country, and he had 24 and 13 in the Cats’ opener. Andre Wesson not playing for an OSU team that I wasn’t very high on in the first place makes this an even easier call.

Zach: Ohio State-- Kaleb Wesson is looking to be on another level this season and I don’t think anyone on Villanova will be able to guard him as he will dominate both ends of the court. Duane Washington Jr and Collin Gillespie will be a great matchup to watch. Buckeyes get it done at home by double digits.
Game 3: McNeese State at Wisconsin (7:00, BTN)
Nick: Wisconsin--I want to take this space to campaign for Micah Potter. He deserves the chance to play this year. The fact that other players were approved for transfer waivers and he wasn’t is ridiculous.

Sam: Wisconsin-- Ditto to Nick. Heck, Joey Hauser may become eligible and what was his excuse? He hates that Markus Howard doesn’t pass? #FreePotter

Zach: Wisconsin-- I think the only reason this game is on here is to plug Joey Hauser… Fine by me.

Game 4: Niagara at Stephen F Austin (7:30, ESPN+)
Nick: Niagara

Sam: Stephen F Austin
Zach: Stephen F Austin

Game 5: Oklahoma State at Charleston (8:00, CBSSN)
Nick: Oklahoma State

Sam: Oklahoma State-- I really like the direction Mike Boynton has the Cowboys pointing. OSU has a lot of experience, and this will be a good test against a quality mid-major program. The shooting of Lindy Waters will help propel the Cowboys to a sneaky good road victory.

Zach: Oklahoma State-- Close game throughout but the Pokes pull away late.
Game 6: Drexel at Rutgers (8:00)
Nick: Rutgers

Sam: Rutgers

Zach: Rutgers-- I love Geo Baker.

Game 7: Purdue at Marquette (9:00, FS1)
Nick: Purdue--As Sam says below, Nojel Eastern will be tasked with covering All-American Markus Howard. Without a proven second scoring option, Marquette will struggle to score enough points. The Boilermakers’ length will go a long way in this one. Trevion Williams and Theo John inside will be another compelling matchup in this contest.

Sam: Purdue-- I for one am glad that Carsen Edwards left Purdue. Him and Markus Howard playing a game of “first to 30 shots” wouldn’t have been very fun to watch, or they both could have scored 50. I think Purdue will look to put Nojel Eastern on Howard and he will do a good enough job of containing him that the Boilers win this one by 10+.

Zach: Purdue-- I disagree in that I think that Edwards vs Howard would have been a fun game to watch, but since it is not going to happen this year, Purdue rolls Marquette as they bounce back from the Texas loss. Purdue is a very long team and the only thing holding them back this year will be consistency from beyond the arc. I could see Matt Haarms going 20/20, 20 points and 20 hair adjustments.

Game 8: Southern Utah at BYU (9:00)
Nick: BYU--The Thunderbirds got a program defining win against Nebraska this weekend. I do not think that Todd Simon’s bunch will win another big road contest on Wednesday night.

Sam: BYU

Zach: BYU-- Yes, TJ Haws is still on the team...

Game 9: Providence at Northwestern (9:00, BTN)
Nick: Providence--The real issue to debate is who is the worst team in the Big Ten. Is it Northwestern, Nebraska or Rutgers? Alpha Diallo leads the Friars to a blowout road win.

Sam: Providence-- Northwestern is awful and Ed Cooley has an experienced bunch back led by the underrated backcourt duo of Alpha Diallo and David Duke.

Zach: Providence-- not even close in this one.

Game 10: Grand Canyon at San Diego State (10:00)
Nick: San Diego State--The Aztecs are an experienced bunch that looks to get back to the NCAA Tournament while contending for the Mountain West title. I like them to get this victory against one of the best teams in the WAC.

Sam: San Diego State

Zach: San Diego State-- Hurts to pick against the uncle of my fellow manager Jason Majerle, but until the Lopes get all their players eligible and healthy, it’s gonna be tough sledding.

Upset Pick (not in games above):
Nick: Colgate over Syracuse--In a day where the schedule isn’t great, this game has the most appeal. The Raiders gave Clemson a legitimate run before bowing out late. Syracuse has some offensive concerns after scoring 34 against Virginia.

Sam: High Point over Boston College-- Tubby Smith coaches HPU and I have a neighbor who goes there. Two justified reasons to pick this one.

Zach: Shenandoah over James Madison-- Shameless plug for the greatest musical group created, Celtic Woman. They sing a song called “Shenandoah”. Although the Dukes didn’t look too bad early against UVA, they drop another game, this time to a Division III school
